Module description

As a CWP you will work within community settings and apply psychological knowledge to support children and young people’s wellbeing through engagement in community setting, including the prevention of mental health difficulties. Within this module community approaches will include consideration of the local context of services and supporting young people to access services to support their needs. As a CWP you will also support services in their understanding of how to respond to mental health needs and provide training to others to help address this. Wellbeing is also linked to the degree of meaningful participation that young people experience, which will be explored within this module.

Module aims - intentions of the module

Within this module you will be trained in two primary prevention approaches within community settings:

Training others:

To identify and have awareness of common mental health difficulties, available resources and how to signpost within community settings. To support and provide structured workshops and training, based on principles of cognitive behaviour therapy, to children, young people parents / carers and health care staff

Participation Engagement Activity:

You will be able to review, understand and support the development of participation of CYP and their families in community settings to improve access to, and effectiveness of, mental health support in these settings.  Your approach will be informed by evidenced based approaches to participation work.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

ILO: Module-specific skills

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 1. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of what steps are being taken by local community organisations to help their children and young people reduce the risks of low wellbeing (however that is construed) and to provide opportunities for them to increase their wellbeing.
  • 2. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges that local communities face in supporting the well-being of their children and young people.
  • 3. To be able to demonstrate and apply an understanding of how to work with local communities to co-produce aims and strategies for increasing opportunities of wellbeing for local children, families, and young people
  • 4. To be able to effectively train others in basic mental health intervention skills

ILO: Discipline-specific skills

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 5. To be able to summarise basic and essential factual and conceptual knowledge of the subject, and demonstrate a critical understanding of this knowledge
  • 6. To effectively address systematically complex problems which may be framed within unpredictable contexts, think critically, creatively, and independently, and fully appreciate the complexities of the issues

ILO: Personal and key skills

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 7. To be able to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, challenge received opinion and develop your own criteria and judgement, and to seek and make use of feedback
  • 8. To be able to manage your own learning using the full range of resources of the clinical discipline and with minimum guidance

Syllabus plan

The module content, module-specific learning objectives, style of delivery and assessment for this module are informed by the national curriculum for the training of CWPs to support the delivery of low intensity practice, training others, community engagement and CYP participation. Teaching content will include:

  • Training others – To identify and have awareness of common mental health difficulties, available resources and how to signpost within community settings. Where appropriate to support and provide structured workshops and training, based on principles of cognitive behaviour therapy, to help children, young people, parents / carers and staff in community settings to manage anxiety and stress.
  • To develop relationships with community groups, leaders and organisers to scope how local community services construe mental health difficulties and respond to them, including attitude to CAMHS - being sensitive to potential cross-cultural differences. To understand how to find common languages for common purposes. To scope what communities are already doing to prevent mental health problems in children and young people and how CWPs might be able to support or add value.
  • Meaningful activities: To understand how meaningful activities are related to wellbeing and mental health in children and young people. To be able to support CYP in accessing meaningful activities to support wellbeing.
  • Participation Engagement Activity:  To review, understand and support the development of participation of CYP and their families in community settings. To critically evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of participation as a vehicle to improve access and effectiveness of mental health support.

Re-assessment notes

Two summative assessments are required for this module. In all cases re-assessment will be the same as the original assessment. Where you have been referred/deferred for any form of assessment detailed above you will have the opportunity to retake within the period specified above from the date that feedback was provided.

If you pass re-assessments taken because of deferral, your re-assessment will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment and the overall module mark will not be capped.

If you pass re-assessment of the presentation taken because of referral (i.e., following initial failure in the assessment), the overall module mark will be capped at 50%. If you pass reassessment of the POD/Portfolio taken as a result of referral (i.e., following initial failure in the assessment), the overall module mark will not be capped at 50% as this is summative but not credit bearing.

If you fail re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e., following initial failure in the assessment), you will be failed in the module and as a consequence you will be failed in the programme and your registration as a student of the University will be terminated.
