2. Description of the Programme

Our BSc Business and Management is designed to equip you for a management career in industry, commerce or the public sector. To this end the programme provides you with a detailed understanding of the functional areas of business and the relationship of management theories and practice to them. In addition to modules covering accounting, economics, marketing and human resource management, there is the opportunity to take a number of optional modules. The programme integrates the various components studied through the final year Strategic Management module. Another feature of the programme is the option of a final year business project or dissertation, which will develop your research skills and involves their application to problems in the local or wider business community.

You will gain detailed knowledge of the various functional areas of a business, a broad appreciation of the environment in which businesses operate, the theory and practice of management, and the range of skills necessary for high employability in the administrative and managerial job market.

4. Programme Structure

Your Business and Management with Year Abroad programme is a four year programme of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 6 (as confirmed against the FHEQ). This programme is divided into four ‘Stages’. Each Stage is normally equivalent to an academic year.  The programme is also divided into units of study called ‘modules’ which are assigned a number of ‘credits’. The credit rating of a module is proportional to the total workload, with 1 credit being nominally equivalent to 10 hours of work.

 

5. Programme Modules

At the point of application or shortly after enrolling students may select a four-year version of this programme. We offer “with Year Abroad”, or “with Industrial Experience” variants. In these cases Stage 3 becomes Stage 4, and Stage 3 is replaced with 120 credits of alternative work and assessment.

 

Students take the modules BUS1908 and BSD2005 in their first and second year as preparation for their year abroad. Students will then be enrolled on the module BUS3000 for their year abroad. This module brings together credits taken at a partner institution and/or the results from the work abroad placement assignment.  

 

To be permitted to undertake study at a European partner institution, students are expected to have a credit weighted average of 50% in Year 1 and must have completed BUS1908 in Year 1 and BSD2005 in Year 2 as preparation for a year abroad. To be permitted to undertake study at an International (non-European) partner institution, students are expected to have a credit weighted average of 60% in Year 1 and must have completed BUS1908 in Year 1 and BSD2005 in Year 2 as preparation for a year abroad. To be permitted to undertake a work placement, students are expected to have a credit weighted average in Year 1 of 50% (for European placements) or 60% (for International work placements) and must have completed BUS1908 in Year 1 and BSD2005 in Year 2 as preparation for a year abroad.

 

Note: Students will not be penalised if they do not attend BUS1908 in Year 1.

Stage 1 consists of 90 credits of compulsory modules and 30 credits of optional modules.

The primary means of imparting subject skills and knowledge is through lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials which offer a rigorous examination of  organisation and management studies, human resource management, marketing and consumer studies, strategic and operations management as well as accounting, economics and finance for managers.

  • ILO3 is delivered through BEM1023 (Discovering Management), BEM2047 ( Organisational Behaviour) and BEM 2021

ILO1 is assessed through a combination of summative and formative assessment and assessment methods include multiple-choice self-check questionnaires, in-class discussion, in-class course work tests, formal examination and practical examination.  Feedback is provided through tutorials. 

 

ILOs 2, 3, 4 and 6 are assessed through a combination of summative and formative assessment.  Assessment methods include individual data collection via audience response, group projects, presentation and seminar discussion, debates, reflective essays, practical business projects, as well as exams, which include short-answer questions and essay questions.  Feedback includes group discussion and peer feedback, verbal feedback delivered in tutorials, written feedback provided on essays and exams and feedback sessions where students are invited to attend a one-to-one meeting with academics to discuss exam performance. 

 

ILO5 is assessed through formative assessment such as workshop preparation, which receives peer and tutor feedback delivered in workshops, as well as summative assessment in the form of group case study presentation and report and formal examination.

7. develop and justify arguments, evidence critical thinking, and contrast and evaluate different assumptions and perspectives.

Lectures, workshops and tutorials aim to develop critical and analytical skills which enable students to debate and evaluate the behaviour of consumers, investors, employers, employees and governments in a rigorous and systematic way. For example BEM1023 requires students to learn the art of persuasive argument in speech and in essay writing. 

ILO8 is assessed through critical reflective essays, debates, presentations, and workshop discussions.   For example, BEM1023  is assessed through formal case study presentations (formative) and critical business reports.  Feedback on debates is provided in tutorials verbally and in writing from tutors and there is an element of peer review feedback.  Formal written feedback is provided on examination performance.  Students may also visit tutors to receive verbal one-to-one feedback on examination performance.

  • BEA1013 Introduction to Accounting prepares students for work in international companies by focusing on the internationalisation of accounting standards.
  • BEM1023 Discovering Management asks students to work on case studies, including one on globalisation. This module also considers the international dimension of business.
  • BEM1019 Fundamentals of Marketing expects students to draw from the work of international marketing scholars and look at marketing and consumption in the context of globalization.
  • BEM3033 Strategic Management uses a number of international case studies so that students gain an international perspective on strategic management. 

ILO9: 

  • BEA1013 Introduction to Accounting asks students to, with guidance, identify, synthesise, analyse and present appropriate information to assist management with controlling the business and taking financial decisions.
  • BEE1034 Economics for Management equips students with knowledge of the role of economics in business, public and private decision making, and also encourages students to ‘think like an economist’ in their everyday lives.
  • BEM1023 Discovering Management expects students to be able to develop and justify arguments, evidence critical thinking, and contrast and evaluate different assumptions and perspectives.
  • BEM1019 Fundamentals of Management course content is structured around real world examples, anecdotes and discussions that will help students develop skills of critical analysis and problem-solving.
  • BEA2010 Managerial Accounting expects students to synthesize information from various management accounting methods.
  • BEM2047 Organisational Behaviour expects students to develop a critical orientation toward the subject matter and an awareness of the complexity of managerial and organisational problems. In addition students should demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate concepts, theories and techniques.
  • BEM2021 Human Resource Management expects students to develop a critical orientation toward the subject matter and an awareness of the complexity of managing people.
  • BEA3008 Finance for Managers requires students to  apply and criticise finance models in a 'real world' context and develop theoretical arguments based on analytical reasoning.
  • BEM3033 Strategic Management requires students to develop their ability to analyse strategic issues from a number of broad functional perspectives, demonstrate a critical knowledge of selected strategy literature and present and defend strategic analyses based on case material, desk research and research in the marketplace.

  • BEM1023 (Discovering Management) requires students to prepare a group presentation, running a tutorial session.
  • BEM1019 asks students to perform in an in-class group presentation.
  • BEA2010 Managerial Accounting expects students to work effectively independently as well as part of a group.
  • BEM3033 Strategic Management requires students to conduct a case study presentation and report in groups. 

ILO11: 

  • BEA1013 Introduction to Accounting asks students to discuss sustainable and unsustainable practices. Corporate accounting is examined as a whole, not only looking at the financial elements, but also trying to identify patterns and explain the social and environmental ones.
  • BEM1023 Discovering Management instructs students in ethical decision making and its effect on contemporary business.  Module content also covers issues of sustainability, and CSR.
  • BEM1019 In Fundamentals of Marketing, the ethics surrounding marketing practices and its relationship to sustainable environments will be considered.
  • BEM3033 Strategic Management explores the impact of ethics and corporate social responsibility on strategy.
