Laboratories are among the most resource-intensive spaces in any sector—using up to 3–10 times more energy per square metre than standard offices (UCL & My Green Lab, 2025). At Exeter, we recognise that sustainability is a shared responsibility, and every action—from experimental design to waste disposal—contributes to our environmental footprint.

Our Commitment

Sustainability is embedded in the University’s Climate Strategy from the Sustainability team, and our Sustainable Labs project, from Technical Strategy & Operations, supports lab users in reducing environmental impact and achieving green accreditations. By engaging with Sustainable Labs, you’re helping us meet our institutional sustainability goals.

Key Initiatives

Environmental Sustainability Concordat
In October 2024, Exeter became an early signatory of this UKRI-led agreement, committing to more sustainable research and innovation practices. This is increasingly relevant for funding applicants, as funders now expect environmental considerations in research proposals.

Exe-Tech Strategy 2030
Launched in early 2024, this strategy outlines how Technical Strategy & Operations are driving sustainable, adaptable research environments. The first annual report (Dec 2024) highlights progress in lab sustainability and contributions to net zero targets.

Green Accreditations
Since launching LEAF in 2021, Exeter became the second UK university to achieve 100% certification across eligible labs by 2022. The updated 2025 LEAF criteria are now live, and we continue to support labs in maintaining or achieving green accreditations.
