Using your phone

The Avaya / Nortel telephony system supported by the Telephony Team brings many features and benefits.

The phones are deployed on a “virtual office” service; delivering the benefits of flexibility and security whilst allowing a hot desking ability throughout the campus.

All Avaya/Nortel phones have the capability of:

  • Displaying caller number
  • Loud speaker - hand free calling
  • Conference calling - Click here for more information
  • Hot Desking - users can 'log-in' to Nortel phones throughout the UoE Campus
  • Support for manager / assistant working
  • Integrated PC Ethernet port allowing both PC and phone to be connected via one data outlet.

The new Standard model is now the 1140 Phone, which provides a Gigabit Ethernet throughput.

Other handsets available include the‌‌ 1220, 1230 and the 2033 conference phone.

Resetting your telephone password

  • Press the services key (circle with an arrow pointing left and right)
  • Use the up or down arrow keys to move to 'Password Admin' and press the enter key (in the centre of the up and down arrow keys)
  • Enter your old password and press enter (centre of the up and down arrow keys)
  • Enter your new password and press the enter key
  • Enter your new password again and press the enter key
  • Your password has now been changed.

Forwarding your phone extension

  • Press the ‘Fwd’ or "Forward" soft key (under the display)
  • Enter the number that you want to forward calls to
  • Press the ‘Fwd’ soft key again
  • The ‘> Fwd’ soft key now has a chevron in front of it indicating that calls are being forwarded
  • To cancel call forwarding, press the ‘Fwd’ soft key again and select Cancel and the chevron will disappear.

The Nortel 1140 has the following features

  • Display incoming caller number – see whose calling
  • Call history – see previously dialled, received and missed calls
  • 5 programmable keys – configure your own autodials. Expandable up to 47 keys.
  • Loudspeaker – useful for hands free and smaller group conference calls
  • 1GB Integrated Ethernet PC port – uses one data socket for both phone and PC
  • Headset compatible – plug in a headset for hands free working
  • Manager / Assistant working – Monitor lines in use

These phones are not generally used in offices - but as support phones for lecture theatres and teaching rooms.

‌The Nortel 1220 has the following features

  • Display incoming caller number – see whose calling
  • Call history – see previously dialled, received and missed calls
  • 4 programmable keys – configure your own autodials.
  • Loudspeaker – useful for hands free and small conference calls
  • Integrated Ethernet PC port – use one data socket for both phone and PC
  • Wall mountable - Usable on a desk or a wall

The Nortel 1230 has the following features

  • Display incoming caller number – see whose calling
  • Call history – see previously dialled, received and missed calls
  • 11 programmable keys – configure your own autodials. Expandable up to 47 keys.
  • Loudspeaker – useful for hands free and smaller group conference calls
  • Integrated Ethernet PC port – use one data socket for both phone and PC
  • Headset compatible – plug in a headset for hands free working
  • Manager / Assistant working – Monitor lines in use

The Nortel 2033 Conference phone has the following features

  • Embedded three microphone design offers 360 degree room coverage with support of up to 20 ft. x 20 ft. (6.1 m x 6.1 m) room dimensions.
  • Ten fixed keys (Line, Release, Hold, Mute, Up/Down Volume, Scroll Up/Down, Messages, Services) for easy-to-use navigation.
  • Full duplex speakerphone supports active and concurrent talking and listening audio paths, ideal for geographically dispersed audio conference participants.
