Overview
- MRes Critical Human Geographies forms part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South West Doctoral Training Partnership, which provides in-depth research training in the social sciences in general and human geography in particular
- Focused on preparing you for a career in social science research, whether at doctoral level at university, or in the public and private sectors
- The MRes programme provides core modules in social and geographical theories and methodologies, along with three research-led modules through which you can experience the variety of cutting-edge research in the department

Course content
This programme provides core modules in social and geographical theories and methodologies, along with three research-led modules through which you can experience the variety of cutting-edge scholarship undertaken in the department:

Teaching and research
Research in Geography and climate change
Our research groups span the breadth of geography: Cultural and Historical Geographies; Environment and Sustainability; Life Geographies; Space, Politics and Society; Cryosphere, Coastal and River Dynamics; and Landscape and Ecosystem Dynamics. We are engaged in interdisciplinary research in areas including climate change and sustainable futures, environmental sciences and earth system science.
We enjoy strong links with national and international research projects, and we attract funding from a wide range of sources including research councils, charities, the UK government and industry.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has seven contributors from Exeter: more than any other university in the world.
How will I learn?
We utilise a range of teaching methods to help you learn, from lectures and seminars, to reading groups and tutorials. Methods modules involve practicals and substantive modules are often based on lectures and student-led seminars. You will be encouraged to develop your own research and disciplinary interests over the course of the academic year.
Assessment
Assessment will vary by module, but will include coursework essays, seminar papers, presentations and a 15,000-word dissertation.
Facilities
The Streatham Campus in Exeter offers the £3.7 million Sediment Research Facility which provides additional laboratories, experimental facilities and a wide range of state-of-the-art analytical equipment.

The MRes Critical Human Geographies is essentially designed to develop in you a broad-based and relevant knowledge of research approaches and methods in human geography and the social sciences, and to provide you with a range of transferable skills appropriate to Masters-level research within the discipline.
The programme aims to prepare you for a career as a professional researcher in either academic or non-academic environments. The core training in social scientific philosophy, epistemology, methodology and analysis is set within a contemporary human geography context, allowing you to apply the wider concepts and skills introduced in the broader social scientific setting to specific topics of geographical inquiry.
