I feel very lucky to have studied at the University of Exeter, where I have learned in depth about both law and business, including the differences and connections between the two fields. It has been an enriching year that has made me want to discover more possibilities.

Due to my lack of legal foundation before entering the Masters degree, I was confused about writing at the beginning of the course, but I actively asked questions to teachers and classmates and gradually solved small problems one by one.

Course content

Studying a Master of Laws in Law and Business offers a rewarding learning experience with opportunities to for students from a non-law and non-business background to gain a firm grounding in a range of law and business topics, and to improve skills necessary at all levels of professional engagement with contemporary and future challenges facing businesses around the world. You will be encouraged to critically reflect on the contemporary legal and business challenges that exist in our globalised world while acquiring the solid legal skills required for your professionalisation.

You will take part in interactive seminars, thought-provoking discussions and critical debates with your peers and academics from across the world giving you unique insight and global perspectives into contemporary law.

Alongside the compulsory dissertation, you’ll choose from an array of optional modules across law and business.

In order to enhance your research and learning experiences and to create a vibrant community of postgraduate students enrolled in this programme, you will be affiliated with one of the research centres for the duration of your programme.

The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.

Stage 1: 60-credit compulsory dissertation module, 0-30 credits of core Law credits, 90-120 credits of optional modules

In addition to the compulsory module listed below, you will study 60 credits of Law optional modules and 60 credits of Business optional modules chosen from the list of optional Law and Business modules available in your year of academic study. Students with no prior background in Law will study 15 credits of compulsory Law modules in both the Autumn Term and the Spring Term.

You should take a minimum of 15 credits of law options and 15 credits of business options in both Term 1 and Term 2.

To compose your 60 credits of taught Law modules, you may choose to take one 15-credit taught Law module outside of the programme. Students without a legal background would only be able to take a module open to non-Law students. This is subject to availability and approval by the programme director. See https://law.exeter.ac.uk/currentstudents/postgraduatemodules/ for optional Law School modules.
