Students are integral to research capability

Professor Geoff Nash discusses the important part research plays in our Natural Sciences programme.

Teaching Excellence at the University of Exeter

Creating an outstanding teaching and learning environment, with students at the heart of everything we do, is at the core of the University of Exeter. This has been recognised through the awarding of a Gold rating in the UK Government’s first national Teaching Excellence Framework.

We believe that by investing in our students and in working in partnership with them, we can create international graduates of distinction who will go on to make their own significant contribution to society.

Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) result

Professor Tim Quine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) introduces the University of Exeter Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) result.

The University combines outstanding teaching, high student engagement and world leading research to create an internationally excellent education for all of our students. Key to our success are our exceptional students and staff.

Ultimately, our internationally-excellent education is founded on the following 4 pillars:

  • We attract talented, engaged students from all backgrounds to study collaboratively with passionate educators.
  • We support our students to progress to graduate-level employment and to compete for the most sought after roles.
  • Leaders at all levels within the University work closely in partnership with elected student representatives.
  • The governing body enables us to continue to invest in the highest quality physical and virtual learning environment

Top-rated student experience and research: nationally and internationally

We are ranked amongst the UK’s top 10 universities. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 98% of our research was rated as of international quality. As a result we were awarded an additional £3.8M for research funding - the third highest gain amongst English universities.

The TEF Panel judged that University of Exeter students from all backgrounds achieve outstanding outcomes. Very high proportions continue with their studies and progress to highly skilled employment or further study. The metrics indicate outstanding levels of student satisfaction with teaching, assessment and feedback, and academic support in all cases notably exceeding our benchmark.

The TEF Panel highlighted particularly:

  • Our outstanding commitment to ensuring positive outcomes for all students
  • A learning experience enriched by teaching delivered by business, industry and professional experts
  • Teaching delivered in an outstanding environment
  • The highest quality support for independent study and research
  • Optimum levels of contact hours and class size designed to support subject-specific progression of learning and the development of graduate attributes
  • Our strategic approach to embedding consistency of experience for all students across the University
  • Our consistent and effective use of management information to enhance student opportunities and achievement, embedded across the institution.
