Biosciences: Evolution, Ecology, and Conservation

Biology is the study of life, from the microscopic bacteria on our skin to the enormous blue whales inhabiting the oceans. As biologists, we ask questions about living organisms and how they interact with their environment. We try to understand the weird and wonderful behaviours that we observe, and why these vary among different individuals and species. We study the evolutionary processes that produced the amazing diversity of life on Earth and how we can best conserve it.

Activity Locations

All subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Penryn campus, Cornwall.

Subject Activity Strand Content

Through this strand, you will broaden your knowledge of the bioscience subjects taught on the University of Exeter Penryn campus: animal behaviour, conservation biology and ecology, marine biology, evolutionary biology, and zoology. Each session will focus on one of these areas and allow you to gain experience of different university learning styles in the classroom, lab, and in the field. 

Activities will include laboratory practicals, a mini research conference, and potentially a field trip (TBC), which will give you the opportunity to explore some of Cornwall's amazing wildlife and learn more about the biological research conducted on campus. During all of these activities, you will be joined by students and staff from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation, and will be able to find out more about their research and where a degree in biosciences could take you. 

This is the perfect opportunity for budding scientists to learn more about what studying biosciences at university is all about. 

 

This subject activity strand has contributions from the following degree programmes:

  • BSc Animal Behaviour
  • BSc Conservation Ecology and Biodiversity
  • BSc Evolutionary Biology
  • BSc Marine Biology
  • BSc Zoology

Entry Requirements

In the event of this subject activity strand being oversubscribed, priority for places will be given to students studying Biology at A Level.

In order to be considered for this subject activity strand, students must have a minimum of grade 5 (B) in GCSE Maths and grade 4 (C) in GCSE English Language.

In order to be considered for this subject activity strand, students should be studying at least one science* subject in their further education.

*Accepted science subjects: Biology / Human Biology; Chemistry; Environmental Studies; Geography; Life and Health Sciences (Double Award only); Marine Science; Physics; Psychology; Maths / Pure Maths / Further Maths; Nutrition and Food Science.

Pass Criteria

In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Virtual Student Conference.
