Sociology and Criminology

In Sociology and Criminology, you will develop an understanding of the contemporary world, human behaviour, and the forces shaping society. Sociology focuses on society and social life, while Criminology is the study of criminal behaviour. Together they form an exciting and relevant stream of study, in which you will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of issues, tackling fundamental questions about society and culture in the present and past.

Activity Locations

All subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus, with the exception of one which will take place on the Penryn campus in Cornwall and one field trip or longer day (details and location TBC). 

Subject Activity Strand Content

In this subject strand, you will discover how people behave and interact and how they have adapted over time, shaping societies across the globe. You will tackle fundamental questions about society and culture in the past, present and future, and examine the rich diversity of human life. Sociology focuses on society and social life, and Criminology is the study of criminal behaviour. Together they form an exciting, varied, and relevant stream of study, in which you will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of sociological, cultural, political, historical, and economic issues. You may study topics as wide and diverse as social inequality, class, the prison system, policing, human rights, mental health, addiction, sex and gender, ethics, social data, misogyny, racism, violence, globalisation, and the media. Subject to availability, you may have the opportunity to engage in Anthropology in addition to Sociology and Criminology. 

The sessions will comprise a mix of interactive activities run by researchers across departments and opportunities to interact with current students, in addition to meeting professionals in the field that have put their degrees into practice. Along the way, you will be supported by key members of staff and student ambassadors who will offer guidance on applying to university and will be available to discuss any practical concerns you may have.  

Sociology and Criminology are fascinating areas of study that can open up many doors in shaping your future career. This exciting programme is concerned with social transformation and in developing an insight into the major challenges facing contemporary society. So whether you are interested in the criminal justice sector or in a career in community or social work or are simply captivated by human behaviour, culture, and society, this is the course for you!

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this subject activity strand. 

Pass Criteria

In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Virtual Student Conference.
