Modern Languages and Cultures

On the Modern Languages degree at the University of Exeter, several major languages are offered: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, and Spanish. As well as these languages, you will learn about cultures from the medieval period to today. On this subject activity strand, you will be encouraged to expand the boundaries of your experience and explore a variety of cultures and settings, considering contemporary real-world issues.

No prior experience of a language is required.

Activity Locations

All subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus, with the exception of one field trip.

Subject Activity Strand Content

Modern Languages and Cultures will provide you with in-depth insights into what it is like to study a language and modern cultures (film, art, history, literature, gender studies, etc.). Our lecturers will discuss both past and current affairs from around the world.

Each session will focus on two different languages, such as: Chinese language and culture and Italian; French culture and a Portuguese taster session; or Russian current affairs and a taster session of German. We will include a variety of study skills and make sure you gain first-hand insights into what it is like to study Modern Languages and Cultures at Exeter.

Entry Requirements

No prior experience of a language is required.

When applying for this subject activity strand, please indicate any languages that you speak or have learned in the past in addition to any that you are studying in your further education. 

Pass Criteria

In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Virtual Student Conference.
