Course content
Our Engineering and Management programmes combine fundamental engineering knowledge and skills with enhanced management theory and practice, giving you the opportunity to develop as an engineer and a manager. Collaborative modules in your first year will give you a broad knowledge across all core engineering disciplines before specialising in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from your second year.
The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.
The multidisciplinary ethos of the first year builds core theoretical and practical knowledge in mechanical, civil, materials, manufacturing, electronic and engineering mathematics. A year-long multidisciplinary group project provides a means of putting core knowledge into practice.

I have always really liked maths and physics. A lot of people in my family are engineers so it felt logical to study engineering. I wasn’t too sure which area I wanted to specialise in though. The degree at Exeter looked perfect because you get to see all the different areas of engineering. I think the engineering and management aspects of the course work really well together as you develop the skills to work across a whole project.
I did my placement at Air Products, an industrial gas company. I was working just outside London in their hydrogen department. While I was there, I was helping to develop a hydrogen refuelling station as well as a source of green and renewable hydrogen for heavy goods vehicles. It was a very interesting and innovative place to work. The placement was definitely an invaluable experience.
