The Big Data revolution is radically changing the way businesses function. As a result there is strong employer demand for people who can extract, manipulate and utilise data to solve problems and drive successful business decisions in an ever changing global environment. A recent report** identified Data Analysts to be the number one emerging role by 2022.
You will need to have an aptitude for learning quantitative skills, but the programme is ideal if you have little previous quantitative experience as you will cover fundamental methods in Term 1. It is also suitable for students looking to upskill their current knowledge in data analytics and business, in order to remain adaptable to the implementation of new technologies.
We combine core modules in data handling and analysis, alongside modules exploring business problems, providing you with the latest academic thinking and analytical skills to use data to optimise business performance. In Term 3 you will complete a summer project to put your analytical skills to the test to solve a sizeable business problem.

Inspired by global challenges
With a climate emergency being announced across the globe, there is increasing pressure on businesses to manage climate exposure in their supply chain and investment portfolios, mitigate risk of climate change and natural hazards on their operations, and manage their environmental impacts. Term 2 addresses this concern by combining function driven modules in Operations Analytics, Marketing Analytics and Strategic & HR Analytics, with a module exploring Environmental Analytics. This module allows you to draw upon the University of Exeter’s significant research strengths in this area, and will equip you with the skills to support growing interest in data analytics in sectors such as Green Finance, Renewables, Disaster Risk Reduction and Natural Hazard Management.
Enhance your degree with Study Abroad opportunities
After your first year of studies at Exeter, you can progress onto the QTEM Programme. QTEM aims to prepare students with excellent quantitative and analytical skills to support their future careers as decision makers leading the global business environment.

Students will be selected and nominated to QTEM by the University of Exeter Business School following a competitive internal application process. Places are limited so we recommend you register your interest before applying for your Masters.

The programme is delivered over three terms and is University-based throughout this time.
The taught components of the programme are delivered in the first two terms, leaving the third term to complete your Business Project. The programme in its entirety runs from September to September.
The programme is divided into units of study called modules which are assigned a number of 'credits'. The credit rating of a module is proportional to the total workload, with one credit being nominally equivalent to 10 hours of work. During the programme you will study modules totalling 180 credits.
Please note that programme structures may be subject to change.
- Descriptions of the individual modules are given in full on the Business School postgraduate module list.
The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.
Learning and teaching
Our postgraduate taught programmes utilise a range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and tutorials.
The aim of lectures is to give you information on ideas that are central to the module and to help you in developing your understanding of complex ideas. Many of the teaching materials for lectures are made available to you electronically to accompany the notes you take during the lecture. Lectures are given by a range of staff members, including leading professors, who integrate their latest research findings into the teaching that you receive. Guest lecturers, including members of industry, also contribute to some modules.
Seminars and tutorials
Seminars and tutorials involve an in-depth exploration of the issues covered in lectures as well as giving you the opportunity to discuss various concepts and theories and receive feedback on your written assignments.
Modules are assessed through a mixture of group work, coursework, project work and examinations; the weighting of each of these components will vary according to the academic requirements of the module. Examinations are normally held at the end of the module, in January and May/June.
Through innovative and practical learning you will have the ability to use data and analytics confidently and creatively, in order to resolve a wide range of operational and strategic problems that face global organisations across multiple sectors.
