Welcome message from Professor Marion Gibson, Director of the FCH programme

Welcome to Flexible Combined Honours at Exeter and congratulations on securing your place! I’m writing to welcome you very warmly to the FCH programme: we’re delighted to have you here. You’ll begin your studies in September and you’ll receive inductions from both FCH staff and staff in your individual subjects. Please do attend as many of these as you can, so that you get all the basic information you need about how FCH works and about the subjects you’ve chosen to combine through our programme. Also please take a look at both the FCH webpages and your subject webpages: these are an essential resource in helping you prepare to study.

During Freshers’ Week, we’ll introduce you to your fellow students, the director and team, and the administrators of the programme. You’ll also be meeting university support staff and advisors, and members of the subject teams who will be teaching you during your time here.

We look forward very much to seeing you in September.

Ahead of your arrival, please complete our online pre-arrival induction which is available via FutureLearn; your Exeter email will have a message with the link. The induction is full of important information and advice about your studies and life as a student here. It also contains activities and discussion boards so you can start to get to know other students even before you start your course.

We strongly recommend that you access this as soon as possible and make the most of this fantastic opportunity to learn more about us, your peers and your programme.

Freshers’ Week 2022: Monday 19 September - Sunday 25 September

During Fresher's Week you should attend the Academic Induction events and activities for your subject/s, as detailed below. If there is any reason why you may not be here for Fresher's Week, please contact the Queen's Hub, who support Flexible Combined Honours students, as soon as possible by emailing info.queens@exeter.ac.uk .

The Student's Guild is also running welcome events throughout the week, including a Welcome Festival and regular guided tours of campus.

Please check your academic timetable during Freshers’ Week, so that you know exactly where and when you need to attend your first classes and lectures! If you have any timetable-related problems or questions, please contact the Queen's Hub on info.queens@exeter.ac.uk .

Please note that the induction timetables for Flexible Combined Honours and some subjects are not yet finalised and may be subject to some change - we recommend that you keep checking this webpage in the run-up to Fresher’s week. The information will also be available via the iExeter app in due course.

Joining instructions

Some subjects will have reading lists, but not all. Where reading lists exist, these will either be available on the subjects’ new students’ websites or posted on ELE pages for individual modules before the start of term.

We will be setting up your modules and then releasing them for you to review. If you wish to change any of your option modules you will be able to do so, if the change is allowable, when you arrive via an online form. More information on module change can be found on our website.

Your timetable will also be available via iExeter (Smartphone App as well as Desktop version). Your full timetable will not be available until all of your modules are confirmed.

'If you want to read ahead, we suggest you have a look at the FCH modules page to review the modules for your subjects. Each subject page will show you any core (compulsory) modules for your subject first, followed by options you might want to consider through another link.'

The definitive lists of modules for any discipline will be available via the link to their own pages. If there is any recommended reading for your modules, it will be shown on the module descriptor, accessed as described above. 

All FCH students take the module FCH1001 Success in Interdisciplinary Study.

Useful information

Modules are available at a range of levels from Beginners to Advanced via the Language Centre in:

• French
• German
• Italian
• Japanese
• Korean
• Mandarin Chinese
• Russian
• Spanish
• British Sign Language

We can help you get the language you study with us named on your degree title. This involves successfully completing a minimum of 60 credits in one language taken through the Language Centre. You could choose to start a new language from scratch or develop an existing one. For example, a Geography student who passes 30 credits at Spanish Beginners and a further 30 credits at Spanish Intermediate 1 could have their degree title amended to BA (Hons) Geography with proficiency in Spanish.

If you are not able to take a language as part of your programme due to timetabling constraints, or if you are interested in studying a language that is not currently available via modularity, our Language Centre also runs an Evening Language Programme with many more language options.
