MSc Mathematical Modelling (Fluid Dynamics)

Fluid dynamics has diverse applications and is used to understand phenomena observed in geophysics and astrophysics. At Exeter, this field of research is the focus of the Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics research group.
On this programme you’ll be taught the mathematical techniques which allow us to model complex systems from hurricanes to sunspots and solar flares.
This course addresses three different and interrelated areas of study:
- The fluid dynamics of atmospheres and oceans
- Waves instability and turbulence
- Magnetic fields and fluid flows
Over the course of your degree you will become embedded in the Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics group through a series of seminars given by internal and visiting speakers.
In addition to gaining specialist knowledge in Fluid Dynamics you will learn the techniques to successfully simulate a range of mathematical phenomenon and will be introduced to key industry-standard programming languages such as Matlab, Python and Fortran.
Your degree will culminate in an independent research project through which you can explore your interests in greater depth. You project will be personally supervised by an academic from within the group and may focus upon or contribute to current research.

Learning and teaching

You will discuss the very latest ideas, research discoveries and new technologies in seminars and in the field and you will become actively involved in a research project yourself. All our academic staff are active in internationally-recognised scientific research across a wide range of topics. You will also be taught by leading industry practitioners.
Modules are either assessed by coursework only, or a mixture of coursework and an exam. The project entails a short initial report or project proposal of around 1,000 words, a public presentation and a dissertation of 10,000 to 20,000 words. This is assessed by your supervisor and a second marker.
Mathematical Modelling underpins many areas of research and a degree in this area can open careers in a huge range of research and development roles.
For many students a masters course can also lead to further academic study such as a PhD.

Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a mathematics, science or engineering subject, with significant mathematics content.

Overall score 6.5. No less than 6.0 in any section.
Overall score 90 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, 21 for listening, 22 for reading and 23 for speaking.
Pearson Test of English (Academic)
58 with no less than 55 in all communicative skills.

Fees and funding
Tuition fees per year 2020/21
- UK/EU: £9,950 full-time
- International: £20,950 full-time
