MA Middle East History

Streatham Campus, Exeter

This programme examines the on the history, culture and politics of the Middle East, including the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, Iran and Israel,  from the nineteenth century to the 1980s. The emphasis is placed on understanding the region in the context of European rivalries, the Cold War, and the onset of globalisation.  You will investigate the interaction between civil society and Islam, and the emergence of new ideologies, such as nationalism. 

The MA in Middle East History will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the Middle East from a historical perspective, whilst exposing you to a range of current interpretations of the historical issues and problems.  You will be supported in developing your ability to apply relevant concepts, theories and your appreciation of different approaches to the study of the Middle East. 

You will develop skills in critical thinking and communication, and prepare you for jobs requiring analysis of historical issues. You will benefit from the extensive library collection on this subject, which will support your developing research skills, enabling you to specialise in a variety of areas for your dissertation.

You do not require extensive background knowledge of Middle Eastern History, although prior experience of the Middle East is desirable.
