The MA in Film Studies is an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary degree that will appeal if you want to study film history and theory in relation to a range of European and World cinemas, and if you who wish to incorporate film practice as an integral part of your degree programme. There are two pathways to choose from: History and Theory, or Film Practice.
The degree is taught by staff with expertise in all key areas of film studies, with particular strengths in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin-American, post-colonial and diasporic cinemas; film philosophy, gender and film, queer cinema, and star studies – as well as questions of national and transnational cinema. (You are also able to select an option module in US cinema from the MA in English Studies should you wish to do so). For students with the appropriate language skills there is the opportunity to study for one academic term in partner institutions in France, Italy and Spain.
The ethos of the MA is committed to interfacing theory with practice. Students following the film practice pathway benefit from contact with academic staff and film practitioners (our filmmaker in residence and honorary professors in Film) as well as visiting speakers from within the film industry. Films made by our students as part of the MA have been screened and even won awards at national and international film festivals.
By joining the MA you will become part of a vibrant postgraduate community including both MA and PhD students. You will also be encouraged to participate in the activities of the Centre for Research into Film Studies, which runs fortnightly research seminars for staff, students and visiting speakers.
