The MA in Critical Global Politics provides an introduction to a range of critical approaches in normative international political theory. The programme provides training and critical perspectives on global politics that is valued by employers in all fields, as well as providing an excellent preparation for entry into a PhD programme in international relations or political theory.
The core module examines how power operates in global politics via an exploration of the theme of empire in twentieth-century political thought. You will be introduced to a range of thinkers who have used the concept of empire to analyse the production of global power relations. The insights and limitations of these approaches will then be examined in relation to a range of contemporary practices and issues in world politics.
Recommended options provide specialist training in relation to issues including:
- climate change and environmentalism
- indigenous land rights
- the global justice movement;
- aid and development
- peace operations
- human rights
- and international security.
The programme is ideal if you are interested in political theory, international relations, security studies and activist politics. It focuses on the theory and practice of contemporary forms of resistance politics from an interdisciplinary perspective including political theory, sociology, political science and international relations. More specifically, it seeks to:
- inquire into the conditions which gave rise to these agents
- identify and critically interrogate their political practices
- and explore the real and potential impact that these practices may have on global politics more generally.
In addition to empirically mapping these forms of political agency, it seeks to reflect on their theoretical significance in light of contemporary debates around the nature of politics, justice and globalisation.
