If you take the programme with Integrated Study Abroad, the second semester is spent at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels
The European media landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade:
- political, cultural and technological developments mean that communication processes can and do occur across geographical, linguistic and political boundaries;
- national media systems are inconsistent with the weakening of national borders that result from globalisation and regional integration (ie European integration);
- technological innovation has blurred the boundaries between the traditional telecommunications and media sectors;
- digital technology has made it possible to compress data, visual image and sound into digital bytes which can be sent down fixed lines or wireless systems to television sets, home computers and new generation mobile telephones.
As the structure of media and communication processes shape political processes, the implications of these technological developments for integration and regulation in Europe are enormous.
The MA in European Media Studies, which is open to students regardless of first degree orientation, explores the effect of these changes on the role of the media in political life and upon regulation. The programme includes study of the European market, regulation, media content, political advertising and the media’s role in European politics. The programme is suited if you are interested in the structure of European markets, European audiences, European and national policy-making and/or European production and content. It will appeal particularly if you are interested in working on media policy (political parties and government, regulatory authorities and IGOs) or wanting to develop increased understanding about the role of the media in contemporary society.
