One Planet MBA
Full time 1 year
Part time 30 months
The One Planet MBA at Exeter provides a very specific kind of education. This is reflected in the rankings and recognition received from a number of external organisations.
Environmental, financial and social changes are challenging traditional business models. We believe that future business leaders across the globe must recognise and embrace these challenges and be capable of developing more sustainable business processes. Our mission is to prepare you to meet those challenges responsibly and creatively, with the leadership qualities and collaborative approach required for profitable international businesses of the future.
Built on a strong foundation of top-flight teaching, research excellence and global business partnerships, our MBA programme will teach you the ability to innovate, to think and act strategically, and to lead others through organisational change.
Developing your skills in core business disciplines – finance, economics, accounting, operations, HR and strategy – is fundamental to the programme. But you will go beyond this and gain the skills and understanding to become a successful business leader in a rapidly changing and resource-constrained world.
Our links with global business and industry mean we can draw on our links with global business and industry and guest speakers who contribute directly to the MBA. The programme's global outlook means you will learn alongside business professionals from many different countries and you will have the opportunity to take part in a number of international study visits.
The MBA teaching team is headed up by by top-flight faculty, business leaders and entrepreneurs which means you will have access to the very latest business ideas, theories and approaches – with the theme of sustainable business at the core of everything you experience.
The programmes consist of 180 credits, divided into modules weighted at either 12 or 24 credits. The following table describes the programmes as planned for delivery at the time of this specification. Constituent modules may be updated, deleted or replaced in future years as a consequence of normal programme development. Details at any time will be available from the Business School website. Elective modules may be taken only if the necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, if the timetable allows and if the module or an equivalent module has not been previously taken.
- 10 core modules and 2 elective modules plus your MBA Project.
- Two non-assessed compulsory activities are included in the One Planet MBA which are designed to develop your skills as a business leader.
- You will be able to attend up to five additional non-assessed Masterclasses to extend your learning and understanding.
- The programme is intensive and includes formal lectures, seminars, group work and individual assignments.
- Lectures and classroom-based teaching is complemented with study trips, mini-consultancy projects, guest speakers and extra-curricular activities.
- A range of additional extra-curricular activities, such as our Guest Speaker programme take place throughout the year to complement your learning and provide opportunities for you to further build your skills, knowledge and understanding.

One Planet MBA Project
The culmination of your programme is your MBA Project which provides an opportunity to take your One Planet learning into the real world and apply your knowledge and skills in a practical context.
There are two distinct options for your MBA Project:
- Sustainability consultancy project in partnership with a local, national or international organisation which will give you an opportunity to apply your MBA learning to a live project and introduce you to the field of applied sustainability consulting.
- MBA graduates need to be able to unravel complex situations, think critically, diagnose problems and justify choices and actions based on sound evidence. The Sustainability research project is an opportunity to showcase your research and analysis skills and develop and in-depth knowledge and understanding of a specialist subject.
Module and Credits
It should be noted that the credit value of each module is either 12 or 24 and this diverges from the University’s 15/30 credit structure. This divergence is permissible given that the MBA is distinctive from other programmes and self-contained, and has specific entry and accreditation requirements. The MBA modules will not be open to students from other University programmes and MBA students will not take modules outside of their own programme.
Each module stipulates an expected number of contact hours and study hours. For a 12-credit module the normal contact hours (face-to-face working with faculty) is 28, supported by 92 hours of private study by the student. The private study consists of preparatory reading prior to the module as well as reading during and after the module to support case preparation or the completion of assignments (82 hours). Where a module involves a four-day intensive study block, sessions run from 9am to 5pm (with breaks) and students are also expected to read and undertake preparatory work during the module evenings.
The Business School will endeavour to offer all of the electives listed but these modules may change (1) if developments in the business environment justify the amendment or replacement of modules and (2) in the event of insufficient student demand for particular electives. It is possible that in some circumstances (e.g. timetabling restrictions, staff availability or to improve the spacing of modules) it may be necessary to pair two elective module choices against each other at the same time. We will avoid this wherever possible to maximise student choice. The Business School also reserves the right to modify the content and reading material in module descriptors in order to ensure modules remain up to date.
Non-Assessed Compulsory Activity
In addition to the core and elective modules on both programmes, further activities will be arranged to facilitate induction at the start of the course and also integrate student learning and promote sustainability leadership in practice at the end of the programme. Further details are provided after the module descriptors:
- Induction Programme [12 hours]: Many MBA students have been away from University education for a long period and need to be reintroduced for effective study. Induction activities focus particularly on study skills, group work and the academic requirements of a Masters degree.
- One Planet Cases: Integrating for Transformation [14 hours]: A two-day seminar, led by WWF
- One Planet Action [8 hours]: A single-day activity where students lead a practical and sustainabilit yrelated contribution to the community.
- Research and Consultancy Skills Workshops [16 hours]: Compulsory workshops are organised in
March each year to help prepare students for their Research Dissertation or Consultancy Assignment. These workshops include proposal-writing, critical literature reviews, research design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation.
The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.
Learning and teaching
Our postgraduate taught programmes utilise a range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and tutorials.
The aim of lectures is to give you information on ideas that are central to the module and to help you in developing your understanding of complex ideas. Many of the teaching materials for lectures are made available to you electronically to accompany the notes you take during the lecture. Lectures are given by a range of staff members, including leading professors, who integrate their latest research findings into the teaching that you receive. Guest lecturers, including members of industry, also contribute to some modules.
Seminars and tutorials
Seminars and tutorials involve an in-depth exploration of the issues covered in lectures as well as giving you the opportunity to discuss various concepts and theories and receive feedback on your written assignments.
Modules are assessed through a mixture of group work, coursework, project work and examinations; the weighting of each of these components will vary according to the academic requirements of the module. Examinations are normally held at the end of the module, in January and May/June.
