Overview

The demand for minerals process engineering is continuously growing. In order for us to obtain minerals that are pivotal to society’s progression, without causing damage to our environment, we must manage mineral development and production in a responsible manner. These valuable minerals are used to feed innovation and create products ranging from roads to mobile phones – and as the ‘provider’ of materials for production, mineral process engineers play a vital role in societal progression.

This programme is taught by the internationally established and world-class Camborne School of Mines (CSM), a combined mining school and geoscience department. Drawing on our research strengths in Mining and Minerals Engineering, this programme prepares you for a career in a variety of multi-disciplinary roles across the sector.

Students learn using industry standard facilities and develop specialist analytical, design and management skills that are relevant to mineral process engineering, while being able to utilise the university’s excellent links both nationally and internationally within the minerals industry.

Teaching and assessment

With Camborne School of Mines' new MSc suites and the mineral processing laboratory, students will have access to exclusive resources to further their experience throughout their studies.

The programme will cover fundamental principles and latest innovations in a variety of subject areas, including minerals processing, extractive metallurgy, process mineralogy and geometallurgy. Transferrable and discipline specific studies will hold an equally important role in this programme, ensuring you not only develop the practical skills needed when in the field, but the strategic knowledge to develop an ethical understanding for the safe processing of minerals.

You will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is available for advice and support throughout your studies, alongside support and mentorship from graduates who are now placed in the industry. There is also a Postgraduate Tutor available to help with further guidance and advice.

A research- and practice-led culture

You will discuss the very latest ideas, research discoveries and new technologies in seminars and in the field, and you will become actively involved in a research project yourself. Graduate skill and destinations

The MSc in Minerals Processing will qualify graduates with both technical expertise and a solid understanding of the industry and business aspects; as well as additional complementary skills relating to communications, teamwork and problem solving.

CSM graduates have gone on to progress into higher level employment and management within the mining industry. Companies they have gone on to work for vary from Glencore, to Atlas and Vedanta Resources to First Quantum Minerals.

Entry requirements 2018/19

A good honours degree, normally above a 2:2, in a science, earth or environmental science, engineering or maths based subject, from a recognised university.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic)

Overall score 6.5. No less than 6.0 in any section.

TOEFL IBT*

Overall score 90 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, 21 for listening, 22 for reading and 23 for speaking.

Pearson Test of English (Academic)

58 with no less than 55 in all communicative skills.

Pre-sessional English

Fee information

Fees can normally be paid by two termly instalments and may be paid online. You will also be required to pay a tuition fee deposit to secure your offer of a place, unless you qualify for exemption. For further information about paying fees see our Student Fees pages.
